Are There Different Types of Hepatitis C Viruses?

Just as sisters are alike in some ways, but still different in others, there are different types of hepatitis C viruses called "genotypes" (JEAN-oh-types).

There are 6 different genotypes, and people can find out what kind they have with a blood test.

In the United States:

  • Approximately 75% have genotype 1.
  • 20% to 25% have genotypes 2 or 3.
  • Genotypes 4, 5, and 6 make up the remaining number of people with hepatitis C.

Health care providers use a person's genotype to help determine the type of treatment the person will receive.
