Are There Different Stages of Liver Damage?

Health care providers measure the extent of liver damage by the amount of fibrosis. If the scar tissue continues to build up, it can cause problems with liver function, leading to cirrhosis.

Your health care provider may use noninvasive technologies such as an ultrasound (uhl-TRAH-sound) to help determine the amount of fibrosis in your liver.

Your health care provider may also do a liver biopsy (BYE-op-see).

A liver biopsy is a test that helps to determine what stage of disease your liver has reached.

  • In this procedure, a small sample of your liver is removed and looked at under a microscope
  • The sample is reviewed to see how much liver damage has taken place
