What Happens to Someone Who Gets Hepatitis C?

What happens to someone with hepatitis C depends on the person and the type of hepatitis C he or she has. Acute (uh-KYOOT) hepatitis C is a short-term illness that occurs in the first 6 months after being exposed to the virus.

Someone with acute hepatitis C may have no symptoms or may have mild symptoms such as:

  • Feeling tired
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick to the stomach

In some people with acute hepatitis C, the immune system is able to fight the virus and clear the virus for good. If a person does not get rid of the hepatitis C virus infection, it can become a chronic (KRAH-nik) infection.

Did you know?

In most people (8 out of 10) who have hepatitis C, the virus stays in the body and becomes chronic.
